Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he joined the Arkansas Confederate Volunteer Infantry and was commissioned a Major. Promoted to Colonel in command of the 5th Arkansas in December, 1862, he fought in the Battle of Stone River and campaigns through Tennessee. On the day he received his commission to Brigadier General, he was killed in action leading the 8th Arkansas at the Battle of Atlanta, Georgia. At age 21, he was the youngest Confederate officer to be promoted General.
