CUBA, NY - Joseph L. Eaton, 84, of 9043 North Branch Road, Cuba, formerly of Portville, passed away Wednesday (April 28, 2010) at Absolut of Allegany surrounded by his loving family, after a long illness.

Born Sept. 8, 1925, in Olean, he was a son of the late Leo and Myrtle Hatch Eaton. On Nov. 10, 1951, at St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany, he married Elizabeth McLaughlin, who survives.

Joe was a graduate of Portville Central School and Hemphill Diesel School. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Navy on the SS Lucien B. Maxwell Liberty ship from 1943 to 1946. He served in the European Theater during the war and participated in the invasion of Normandy.

Joe was employed by Boss Linco Lines Inc. for 22 years and by MDS Laboratories until his retirement in 1989. After retirement, he and his wife traveled and looked forward to spending time with family and friends in the winter season in Florida. He was an honorary Kentucky Colonel. He enjoyed watching Buffalo Bills football, camping and most of all spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Surviving besides his wife of 58 years are six children, nine grandchildren, a brother, two sisters-in-law, an aunt; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Robert, Steve, Richard "Dick" and Jack Eaton; two brothers-in-law, Chester Welch and James Kane; and a sister-in-law Geraldine McLaughlin.

Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 51 S. Main St., Portville. Funeral services will be held Saturday (May 1, 2010) beginning with a prayer service at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. in Sacred Heart Oratory, Portville. Father Gregory Dobson and Monsignor Thomas Walsh will be celebrants.

Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
