Coroner Webster Investigates Death of Charles A. Cave
Charles Augustus Cave, 67, who died suddenly yesterday afternoon while repairing a shed at the home of Miss Lena Abbott, 116 Howard street, had been a resident of Carthage five years. He and his family came here from Montana.
Mr. Cave was born December 13, 1876 in Iowa. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Ella Cave, to whom he was married December 23, 1900, in Columbus, Nebraska; three daughters, Mrs. Earl Hall of Carthage, Mrs. Dale Lund of Belleville, Illinois and Mrs. Ralph Johns of Portland, Oregon; four sons, O. W. Cave of Lincoln, NE., Elbert Cave of Kearney, NE., Francis Cave of Kalispell, Montana and Cpl. Leslie Charles Cave, who is serving with the armed forces overseas; a brother Robert Cave of Verdel, NE., and 15 grandchildren. Several of the children are expected to come here for the funeral.
The body is at the Ulmer Funeral Home.
Dr. R. W. Webster, county corner, who made an investigation, pronounced death due to "myocardial degeneration due to hypertension."
Mr. Cave was found dead about 2:30 by Miss Abbott. Mr. Cave's home was at 318 North Garrison.

Body of Charles Cave, 70, Found This Afternoon
Charles Cave, about 70 years old 318 North Garrison avenue, died suddenly while engaged in doing some work at the home of Miss Lena Abbott, 116 Howard street. His body was found at 2:40 o'clock by Miss Abbott who called member of the police department.
According to Police Chief Roy McLaury, who investigated, the man had been repairing a shed at the home and was using a jack in an effort to straighten up the building. Dr. R. W. Webster, coroner, who made an investigation, announced that death was due to a heart attack.

Cave family background through the years
On the 1900 US Federal Census enumerated on the 13th day of June reveals Charles and Ella Cave most likely not long after being married living in Platte county, Nebraska in the township of Monroe. At this time they have no children. He is 24 and she is 20. Although Ella gives her birth state of Illinois, her parents have immigrated here. Her father from Sweden and her mother from Norway. The community they are living in has a large population of families descending from Sweden so it may be assumed that they are living among Ella's relatives, her maiden name being unknown to the writer of this information.
Charles is 34 and Ella is 32, and they have moved to Loup county, Nebraska in the Sawyer twp at the time the 1910 US Federal Census is taken. He is farming and they have had several children in this 10 year period. Otis W age 9, Mabel I age 5, Francis J age 3, Olive E age 2, Albert C 1 month, and also in the house is Charle's father Henry Cave, age 82.
The 1920 US Federal Census enumerated on 25th of March Charles Cave is listed as being a resident of Custer county, Nebraska. He is 43 and doing general farming. In the household with him is his wife Ella age 40, children Otis W age 19, Mable J age 15, Francis J age 13, Olive E age 11, Albert C age 10, Leslie age 8, Fern age 5, and Vernon age 2. All the children were born in Nebraska.
By the time the 1930 US Federal Census is enumerated on April 26, 1930 Charles Cave age 54, is now farming in Daniels county, Montana. Others residing in the household with him were his wife Ella age 51, and children Lesley 18, Fern 15 and Vernon 13. All the children were listed as being born in Nebraska. Residing in the house next door to Charles is Francis Cave, age 24 also born in Nebraska. He gives his parents place of birth as Iowa and Illinois which matches Charles and Ella's. This is an older son in his own house with his wife Adeline age 19 and a daughter Darlene age 1 1/2.
By the time of his death in 1944 Charles and Ella have moved to the Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri area, living at 318 North Garrison Ave. According to the information Ella gave on his Missouri Death Certificate, his age was 67, he was retired and his parents names were Henry and Mariah Ridgeway Cave. The cause of his death was reported as heart disease. His funeral arrangements were under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home and burial was in Park Cemetery in Carthage.
NOTE: Ella is not buried in Park Cemetery.
