Howard K. Deischer, 98, formerly of Emmaus, died January 27th in the Lutheran Home at Topton. He was the widower of the late Mary E. (Reese) Deischer. Born in Emmaus, he was the son of the late Jonathan and Blanche (Knauss) Deischer. He was a direct descendent of Sebastian Knauss, one of the founders of Emmaus. In 1922, at the age of 16, Howard joined the Patriotic Order Sons of America, Washington Camp 398, Emaus and served as their secretary for many years. On January 1, 1983 he was assigned to the POS of A, Washington Camp 11, Allentown as the Member at Large. Howard graduated from Emmaus High School and received his teachers credits at Kutztown University, graduated from Muhlenberg College, received his Masters Degree in history from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Secondary Supervision Certificate from Lehigh University. He started his teaching career in Salisbury Township. He served 37 years as a teacher and principal of Emmaus High School. He taught for ten years at the Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, serving as Interim Headmaster for two years. He served on the Emmaus Borough Council for three terms, 12 years as Burgess. He was one of the founders of the Emmaus Public Library and the Shelter House Society. He was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, Emmaus, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon and Teacher. He was a former member of the Emmaus Lions Club. He was president of the former Lehigh Valley Athletic League from 1935 to 1946. Survivors: Daughters, Betty Jane Hodkinson of Ormond Beach, FL and Mary Ann Wotring of Chino Hills, CA; Sister, Mae Schultz of Frederick, PA; 7 Grandchildren; 5 Great Grandchildren. Services: Memorial Services, 11:00 AM, Wednesday, February 2nd in St. Johns United Church of Christ, 139 North 4th Street, Emmaus. Private Interment in Northwood Cemetery, Emmaus.
