HOME WITHOUT MOTHER. Death of Mrs. Chas. D. Lemley, Nov. 15th, 1893.
In the death of Mrs. Lemley, Centralia loses one of its most consistent Christian mothers. A woman whose good influences have been fell by all those who enjoyed her intimate acquaintance. We remember her well and honor her memory for the many excellent lessons taught us in childhood at the old school house in Centralia 25 years ago. Her Christian influences were so impressed upon our young mind that we have never forgotten them. Whenever her name is brought up we remember her only for the good lessons taught us. The following verses express our sentiments:
Each silver hair, each wrinkle there,
Records some good deed done,
Some flower she cast along the way,
Some spark from love’s bright sun.
The very falling of her step
Made music as she went;
A loving song was on her lips,
The song of sweet content.
Fold reverently the weary hands
That toiled so long and well,
And while our tears of sorrow fall,
Let sweet thanksgivings swell.
She’s safe within the Father’s house.
Where many mansions be;
Oh, pray that thus such rest may come,
Dear heart, to thee and me!
We are told that during her last days on earth, while attended with great pain and suffering, she exhibited that fortitude and force of character which is always with those who have lived an honorable life. No fear of death but in peace with her God —ready to go on call. In this life we have the true Christian character well exemplified. We who knew her intimately realize fully the great loss her family and the community have suffered.
Mrs. Lemley had been in feeble health for about two years, but was not confined to the house and her bed until within a few hours of her death She died from ulceration of stomach and lungs Wednesday, November 15th, 1893, aged 63 years, seven months and seven days. She was born at Glenham, N. Y., March 8th, 1830. Was one of eight children, of which two sisters and one brother are still living. She was married to Mr. Lemley February 7th, 1849, at New Lebanon, N. Y. They lived a short time at Hinsdale, Mass., then came to Centralia, Wis., in 1857 where they have since resided. She was the mother of three children, J. W. and Chas. E. Lemley, and Mrs. Lily S. O’Reily, all living.
She was a member of the Congregational Church at Hinsdale and later one of the charter members of the First Congregational church in this city. She joined the M. E. Church here after its organization and was a member of it until death.
The funeral service took place at her home in Centralia and was conducted with that simplicity characteristic of the woman. The song service was of those hymns she had learned to love in life and the sermon in the same keeping, delivered by Rev. Fretts. A large number of her friends paid their last respects to one whom they had learned to love for her many virtues.
