James Samuel Diehl was the youngest of 9 children. He married first Anna Catharine May Flohr about 1890, had two children, and was divorced before 1900. Children:

-Rosa Ellen "Rosie" Diehl (1893-1970)
-Glenn Webster Diehl (1895-1968)

He married second Annie H. Rudisill 21 May 1918 and they did not have any children.

James dabbled in different professions, listed as a miller and a carpenter (like his father), a farmer, and later in life a poultry dealer.

According to his passport application of 1916, James was 5 feet 6 inches tall with dark gray eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion.

Shortly before his second marriage, James took a 6 month trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His passport application seemed to indicate that he intended to stay in Brazil for 2 years, but his trip was cut short. His return trip took him through Cristobal, Canal Zone, and Panama, on the ship Carrillo.
