He was born December 23, 1911 in Zillah, Wash. To Henry and Susie (Bush) Gilliland. He was raised and educated in Zillah and Yakima.

On June 18, 1938 he married Helen Lee of Zillah. In his youth he worked on his father’s fruit orchard and at the Yakima Fruit Growers Association (Big “Y”) in Zillah. He later became accountant and manager of the Yakima Valley Petroleum Company in Yakima.

In 1943 the family moved to Seattle where he was employed by the Washington State Department of Licensing. He was president of the Olympia Wurlitzer Organ Guild and the Northwest Conference of Home Organ Clubs.

He was affiliated with the F.O. Eagles #289 of Yakima and a life member of the B.P.O. Elks #186 of Olympia.
