Old Resident Passes On

Another of Mojave's old pioneers has passed into the great Beyond. Mr. James Phillip Mattingly, 73, who came to Mojave in 1923 was born in Omaha, Neb., on February 12, 1867 and although not a veteran thought so much of the flag that at his burial it was lowered to half-mast at the cemetary and on the public buildings.
He leaves his wife and a daughter by a former marriage, Mrs. Bernard Finin, and a grandson, Jimmie Finin, to mourn his passing.
He was a member of the Modern Woodsmen Lodge of Lancaster, and had been ill for more than a year prior to his death. He was the oldest of eight children. He married his wife Emma on July 21, 1920, no children were born to this union. His little grandson, Jimmie, always affectionately called him "The Boss".
Coming to Mojave in 1923 he built the Elite hotel which was later entirely destroyed by fire. Nothing daunted he and his good wife set to work to retrieve their loss, and together they built a new building which is today functioning as the Elite Hotel in Mojave.
Burial was in the local cemetery from the St. Mary's of the Desert Catholic Church with Rev. Father O'Shea officiating after the Rosary had been said for him at the Chapel in Lancaster by Father Kennedy. Altar boys were Raymond Temple and Patrick Wolfe.
