Julia Beatrice (Cobb) Tarbutton (82) passed away on Friday, September 24, 2004 in a nursing home in Mesquite, Texas. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, she mentally deteriorated over the years and was surrounded by family members when she took her last breath.
Born on July 1, 1922, in Richland, Texas, she was a longtime resident of 909 East First Avenue in Corsicana. Loved by many for her warmth and caring personality, she was always spreading humor, joy, and kindness to all those she encountered. She worked as a domestic for Dr. Robert Bone and Drs. Jack & Mary Bankhead before retiring.
Julia is survived by her husband of sixty-two years, Joe Tarbutton. They married when she was 19, and he was 20. Joe, a handsome surly man was loved and shielded by her. Soon after they married, she became pregnant, but their first son died of pneumonia shortly after birth. Nine months later tragedy struck again with the arrival and sudden death of another son. Julia was beside herself with grief. Upon discovering that she was pregnant yet again, she got down on her knees and asked, “Dear Father in Heaven, am I ever gonna be able to have a child that lives?” According to her, the Heavenly spirit answered, “If you want your next child to live, name him after the first letter of the alphabet.”
On August 2, 1944, Julia gave birth to twins, a girl and a boy, Ada Mae and Adolphus. Julia's prayers had been answered. Yet shortly thereafter, Joe was sent off to the Army where he served for 15 years. When Joe got out of the service his twins were practically adults. Without a moment to waste in the reunion, Julia was pregnant and delivered Michael on July 5, 1959. Ten short months later on May 3, 1960, another set of fraternal twins were born, Donald and Ronald. Seventeen months later on October 17, 1961, another son arrived, Bobby Joe. On January 1963, Carl Tarbutton was born. The following year marked the celebrated arrival of baby sister, Beatrice Maxine. On August 3, 1967, the last of the Tarbutton brood arrived with Robert. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who treasured her family.
