Enlisted on 4/27/1861, he was mustered into "C" Co. AL 3rd Infantry as a Corporal.
Promoted to 1st Sergeant 9/12/1861.
Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant 6/1/1862.
Promoted to 1st Lieutenant 6/23/1862.
POW 9/1862 near Boonesboro, Md.; paroled and exchanged at Aiken's Landing on 10/19/1862; given a Medical Furlough of 30 days on 11/10/1862.
Promoted to Captain in 1863, he was the Company Commander when he was Killed In Action in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Va.

The 3rd Infantry Regiment was organized by Colonel J.M. Withers in April, 1861, at Montgomery, Alabama. Men of this unit were recruited in the cities of Mobile and Montgomery, and the counties of Man, Lowndes, Coosa, and Autuaga.
Under Brig. General Cullen A. Battle, the regiment bore a conspicuous part in the battles of The Wilderness and Spotsylvania, losing many.
