Joe Thomas was born in Clifton, Texas, to the late Joe Thomas Cummings, Sr. and Ophelia Goains Cummings. He was raised and attended school in Meridian. In 1954, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served until 1958. In 1959 he reenlisted with the U. S. Army and served in Vietnam and was discharged in 1967 as a Staff Segreant. Joe received several medals including the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal for Heroism, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal and recevied two Purple Hearts. While he was in the Army, he met and later married Jean Broadway on Sept. 3, 1960, in Dillon, South Carolina.
Joe went to work for General Tire in Waco where he worked for several years. He later opened and operated a Gulf Service Station in Meridian along with his brother, Tommy Malott. The business was sold and not one to sit around the house, he began working for the City of Meridian before his retirement. Joe was a member of the Meridian First Baptist Church.
Joe was preceded in death by an infant son; and brothers, Jerry Malott and Tommy Malott.
He is survived by his wife, Jean, of Meridian; daughter, Sandra "Sandy" Cummings Bryant and husband, Kevin, of Winters; son, Adam Cummings and wife, Paula, of Lago Vista; grandchildren, Addison Cummings, Ashley Cummings, Dylan Bryant, Cole Bryant, Drake Bryant, Cash Bryant and Wesley Gosdin; two great-grandchildren; sister, Patsy Smith, of Morgan; sister-in-law, Connie Malott, of Meridian; number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
