In 1860, he was a farm laborer living with and/or working for farmer Henry B. Weaver in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. By 1864, he stood 5' 10" tall and had auburn hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg July 31, 1864, mustered into state service at Harrisburg August 16 as a private with Warren's Independent Cavalry Militia Company, and honorably discharged with the company November 30, 1864. The state docked his pay $2.95 for a lost bayonet and scabbard.
