RAPID CITY- Jon D. Evans Sr., 74, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 15, 2013.
Jon was born June 16, 1938 to John Lee Evans and Ledora (Knight) Evans in Nyack, New York.
Jon served his country in the US Army in Vietnam and Korea. After an honorable discharge, he returned to New York and work 33 years for Orange & Rockland Utility Company.
After his retirement he began traveling across the United States in a van-type camper. He enjoyed RV'ing and it eventually brought him to South Dakota.
He fell in love with the Black Hills and everything there was to appreciate here. He enjoyed the buffalo in Custer State Park. In 1999, he moved to Rapid City. He met Tonnie Lackey in church and in 2001 they were married. A bigger RV took them across most of the states enjoying camping.
Jon was a member of a large camping club called NAARVA. Each year, hundreds of RV'ers would meet up at a camp area in any state and spend a week. He loved that.
Jon was a good and generous man; always there to help at any time. His smile and personality always preceded him.
Jon loved life and lived it to the fullest. He loved his log home, he loved Jesus, and he loved traveling back to Virginia for reunions and celebrations with family and friends.
Jon was an active life member and Chaplain of the Vietnam Veterans Association Chapter 463 and of the Disabled American Veterans Association.
He was a life member of the DAVA Unit 3 and the VFW Post 1273, the American Legion, Legion Riders, and 40/8.
He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife, Tonnie Evans, Rapid City; his children: Gwendolyn Drakeford, Hackensack, NJ; Cynthia (Frank) Phelps, Irvington, NJ; Regis Asherman, Richmond, VA; Darryl (Meta) Evans, Aiken, SC; two brothers, William (Carmen) Evans, Columbia, SC; Roger (Beatrice) Evans, New City; NY; three sisters: Gwendolyn Burnette, Nyack, NY; Marjorie (Altemus) Brown, Chesapeake, VA; and Dorothy Ann (Jay) Stukes, Spring Valley, NY; his stepmom, Sue Evans, Danville, VA; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
