Born in Florence County, Mrs. Gardner was a daughter of the late Charles Eugene and Marie Timmons Purvis. She was a member of the D.A.R., a member of Central United Methodist Church and a member of the Wesley United Sunday School Class.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. William Shelby Gardner Sr.; three brothers, Luther Timmons Purvis, Gerald Purvis and James A. Purvis; and two sisters, Miriam P. Richardson and Evelyn P. Hayes.
Surviving are a daughter, Anne Marie Gardner NeSmith and her husband, Burt NeSmith, of Florence; a son, William Shelby Gardner Jr., and his wife, Debbie Gardner, of Stuart, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Jane G. Purvis of Florence; two grandchildren, Karin Marie Sterling and Joseph Peter Sterling; a great-granddaughter, Marie Grace Sterling; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Evergreen Baptist Church Fund, 6316 Pamplico Highway, Effingham, SC 29541 or to the Central United Methodist Church Music Fund, 225 W. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29501.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 21, in the Central United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 20, at the funeral home.
