J.A. Ritchott, Chicopee City Auditor, Dies
City Auditor Joseph A. Ritchott, 68, of 184 Rimmond Ave., Chicopee auditor for the pass 28 years and a former Hampden County deputy sheriff, died Friday in Mercy Hospital.
The veteran city official suffered a stroke in his home Thursday noon and was taken by police ambulance to the hospital. He died at 1:15 a.m.
Born in St. David, Quebec, Can., on June 12, 1897, the son of Magloire and Marie (Parent) Ritchott, he was named Chicopee auditor in early 1939 and held this post until his death.
Mr. Ritchott was educated in the local and St. Frederick Schools of Drummondville, Can., and the College Cote des Neiges in Montreal.
He was married to Viola H. Hebert in Canada on May 7, 1922 and she survives him with two sons, Roger H., of Chicopee and Norman J., assistant city auditor in Chicopee; daughter Paula June Gray of Coral Gables, Fla.; two brothers, Wilfred of Chicopee and Albert of Suncook, N.H.; two sisters, Mrs. Ann Vient of Springfield and Mrs. Blanche Babineau of Chicopee; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He served as a deputy sheriff for eight years, and was a communicant of Assumption Church. He held membership in L'Union Canadienne, Court Bonneville, Franco-American Foresters, Kiwanis Club, Chicopee Lodge of Elks, United Commercial Travelers and the Municipal Finance Officers Association.
The funeral will be held at the Grise funeral home, Chicopee, Monday at 8 a.m., with a solemn requiem high mass in Assumption Church at 9. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Chicopee. Calling hours from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
