Pioneer of State and War Veteran Dies in Malta. Came to Montana in 1865 in Covered Wagon

Malta, June 2--Daniel Tressler, age 86, died Wednesday in this city. He was one of the early pioneers in this state, having come to Montana shortly after the civil war.

Probably no one in the state has a more interesting life and a greater experience than he. When just a young man he enlisted in the war with the 37th Ohio infantry and served for three years and came out of the service with a rank of first lieutenant. Shortly after the close of the war, in 1865, together with two companions, came to Montana, making the trip in a covered wagon and their first stops in this state were Virginia City and Bannock.

He lived in Virginia City during the period when the Vigilante committee was the law of the land and saw its enforcement. It was generally understood that he was a member of this committee but no one ever heard him confirm or deny the report. After mining for several years in the Virginia City country he went into the sheep business on Flat Willow creek near Billings.

A number of years ago he came to this part of the state and filed on land near Landusky, where he again entered the sheep business, which he followed for a number of years. He has made this part of the state his home since that time. At one time he owned one of the gold mines in the Little Rockies, which since the time of his disposal has proved to be one of the paying properties of the hills.

He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Maude Whitcomb and Mrs. Mabel Walker, both of Neihart; and Mrs. Mildred Smith, of Winnett, and a number of relatives in this city.

The funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon by the Legion post of this city, and burial made in the Malta cemetery.
