Virginia was a leader in historic preservation and dedicated much of her adult life to its causes: by saving and preserving George Washington's house and estate Mount Vernon. Virginia's sons honored their mother's interest with Mount Vernon after she died by donating Chippendale-style furniture once owned by Washington and by recreating Washington's deer park on the Mount Vernon estate. Furthermore, the Campbell heirs dedicated their lives to maintaining their original homestead located on (old) Lucas Place in St. Louis City proper. By all accounts, Virginia had led a progressive & happy life. Sadly, most all of her children died tragically young- the victims of poor health care and disease brought on by their exposure to Victorian-era design and innovation: pollution, lead paint, lead piping & contaminated tap water. An ironic slap in the face to the family of such stalwart and enterprising gentility.
