Samuel H. Fels Jr. was born May 2, 1905 in Amana, Iowa,the oldest child of Sam and Dorothy Fritsche Fels. He became an apprentice in the machine shop in Amana was was quite skilled. He left Amana and was working at Cedar Rapids when he was injured in an automobile accident on October 27, 1928. He was on his way to Amana to visit his parents when he lost control of his car and was thrown from the vehicle. He suffered a fracture of his neck and was treated at the University of Iowa hospital but he remained paralyzed. He was taken home where he weakened and eventually died on Februrary 6, 1929.
