Calvin "Papa C." Mahanay, 87, passed away Friday, January 18, 2013, in a local medical center.

A graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2013, in Glenwood Cemetery in Alvarado, Texas, with Thomas McIntire officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Donald Mahanay, Ronald Hess, Gerald Owen, Mike Mahanay, Curtis Mahanay, and Mike Keenan. Arrangements were made by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, Texas. The family will receive friends at a visitation 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Calvin was born October 29, 1925 to Lee Mahanay and Naomi Prestridge Mahanay in Alvarado, Texas. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII and was part of the post surrender occupation of Japan. Calvin married Betty Combs on December 30, 1949 in Alvarado, Texas. He was one of the founding members of the Church of Christ in Alvarado. Calvin and his family moved to Abilene, Texas in 1992. He was employed with the United States Government in the general services administration as a regional recruitment director until his retirement. Calvin was an avid artist who loved to draw charactertures. He was a member of the Southern Hills Church of Christ in Abilene.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Betty Mahanay (June 16, 1999}.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Mahanay of Fort Worth, Texas and Sandra Merck of Abilene; a son, Joe Brent Mahanay of Abilene; two granddaughters, Tara Maldando of Fort Worth and Katy Merck Henderson of Frisco, Texas; a grandson, Conner Merck of Abilene; and a great-granddaughter, Riley Henderson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the donor's favorite charity.
