On July 3, 1863, at the battle of Gettysburg, Daniel received a wound to the right arm that required amputation. According to his pension card record, Daniel's right arm was lost "so near the shoulder as to prevent the use of an artificial limb." After recovering , Daniel was discharged for disability on December 30, 1863 at West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
