Bertrand Leslie Shurtleff was the son of Eugene Kossuth Shurtleff and Hattie Elma Cook. Bert graduated from Brown University, Class of 1922, a member of the fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha. He was an offensive lineman for the Providence Steam Rollers and the Boston Bulldogs and is in the elite list of Brown University Hall of Fame.

Bert was also a professional wrestler under the name "Mad Murdock" and later lectured at high schools, civic clubs and other groups about the fakery of wrestling.

Bertrand Shurtleff was an author and wrote many books and short stories. His most popular books were:
