The original information was that her maiden name was Blake. However, her death record indicates her parents were Herman Swift and Nancy Parker. The Blake name was based mainly on the Census records of 1850 and 1860 where the household included Nancy & Sarah (Sally) Blake.

In 1850, she is listed as Maria Hodges (age 23) and living in Bennington with Sally Blake (age 73), Nancy Blake (age 52), and her daughter Sarah Adeline Hodges (age 1).

Sometime before 1860, she married Isaac Pillsbury. In the 1860 Census she is listed as Maria Pilsbury (age 33) living with Isaac Pilsbury (age 33), Addie Pilsbury (age 11 - would be Sarah Adeline Hodges), Sarah Blake (age 83), Nancy Blake (age 63), and Jane Edyt (age 26). Jane Edyt is listed as a teacher - it is unknown if there is a family relationship with anyone in the household.

According to a letter from Isaac to his step-granddaughter Olive Pillsbury Traver, Maria was married to Cyrus A. Hodges (son of the Baptist minister Cyrus Whitman Hodges) when her mother, Sarah Adeline, was born. However, in 1850 Cyrus was living with his parents in Bristol, Vermont while Maria was living in Bennington. The circumstances of the marriage and apparent divorce are otherwise unknown.
