Explorer. A geographer and mountaineer. He and fellow explorer Ludwig Purtscheller were the first people in recorded history to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which they did on October 6, 1889. The son of publisher Herrmann Julius Meyer, he studied history, botanic and germanistics on the universities of Leipzig and Berlin in Germany. He traveled Asia, North and South America, wrote several books about these travels, and took over the science section of the Meyer publishing Company in 1884. In 1969 the government of Tanzania erected a memorial plate on the South side of the Mountain for him and Purtscheller.
