He became part of the famous Biograph Studios of the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company in The Bronx, New York, beginning in 1897. His brother Harry Marvin (1862-1940), was one of the four founders of the studio including Herman Casler (1867-1939), William Kennedy Laurie Dickson (1860-1935), and Elias Bernard Koopman (1860-1929). He then went to Cuba with the cinematographer Gottfried Wilhelm "Billy" Bitzer (1872-1944), and began filming events that happened during the Spanish-American War in 1898. He also directed the short film, "Sherlock Holmes Baffled" (1900), which was the earliest known film to feature Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective character Sherlock Holmes. He then continued to work with pioneering film director D.W. He continued to work in films as a cinematographer until his unexpected death. He passed away from a heart attack in Los Angeles, California, on January 18, 1911, at the age of 51. Following his death, he was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens, New York. He was married to Caroline Schnatterer Marvin from 1890 until his death on January 18, 1911, at the age of 51. The couple had no children together. Another source says he was married to Sarah E. Babcock Marvin. On an interesting note, his nephew Daniel Warner Marvin II (1894-1912), his brother Henry's son, perished in the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912.
