James Alvin Jackson, 97, of Amarillo died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road, with the Rev. Jerry Davey officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors.

James was born Oct. 11, 1915, in Stephenville to James and Bertha Jackson. He attended school and grew up in Matador. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army and served as a heavy machine gunner and driver in World War II in the southern Philippines. He was discharged in 1946 and moved to Amarillo, where he was employed as a cowboy and truck driver by the Bivins and Matador ranches. James retired in 1975 and enjoyed drinking coffee at the stockyards with his friends. James loved fishing and spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings and his former wife, Norma Jackson.

Survivors include a brother, John Jackson and wife Jill of Lubbock; a sister, Janell Shirley of Odessa; two daughters, Jo Rodriguez and Gail Carlson of Amarillo; two sons, Jerry Jackson and wife Irene and Johnny Jackson, all of Amarillo; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
