Narcise Nelson Montray was born in Montreal but immigrated to New York State to fight in the civil war. After he was mustered out he first worked briefly as a shoemaker, and then opened and ran a grocery store in Lockport. He married Betsey Clark Law who predeceased him in 1875. They had three children, Caroline, known as Carrie or Flossy, who may have died as a young girl, and two sons Nelson Narcise and Edward Harvey. Their daughter Caroline "Flossy" may have died sometime between June 14 1865 and June 27 1870, the approximate date being based on the New York and Federal census, but the actual date and cause of death is unknown at this time. There is another possibility that she moved from the family home before 1869 and married at a young age, but we await verification of this. Narcise became a heavy drinker following the death of his wife, and died from head injuries after a fall while under the influence.
