When James P. Mansfield was born in 1845 in Augusta, Virginia, his father, John Mansfield (1809-1890), was 36 and his mother, Ellen O. Gorman (1814-1892), was 31. He married Mary Ann Kight on August 22, 1867, in Westernport, Maryland.

James P. Mansfield and Mary Ann Kight had ten children in 17 years:

He was killed by a fall of roof coal on October 9, 1886, in Lonaconing, Maryland, at the age of 41, and was buried in Saint Peters Catholic Cemetery, Westernport, Maryland.

A Fatal Mining Accident.
On Saturday afternoon James Mansfield, an employee of the Koontz mine of the New Central coal company, at Lonaconing, was killed by a fall of roof coal. The deceased resided on Buck Hill and was a highly respected and worthy citizen. He was a brother of Capt. William Mansfield, passenger conductor on the Cumberland and Pennsylvania railroad, and of the late ’Squire John Mansfield, of Lonaconing, He was aged about 4O, and leaves a large family. He was a member of the Knights of Labor, but not of the insurance society of the order. He was, however, a member of St. Mary’s Beneficial Society. An inquest was held and a verdict rendered exonerating the company from all blame.

Mining Fatality at Lonaconing - James Mansfield Killed.

James Mansfield, a miner in the New Central company's Koontz mine, Lonaconing, was instantly killed yesterday by a fall of roof coal. Two men, on of them his nephew, who were working by his side, escaped unharmed. The decease resided on Buck Hill, and was a wothy citizen. He was a brother of Capt. Wm. Mansfield, passenger conductor on the Cumberland Railroad, and of the late Squire John Mansfield, of Lonaconing. He was aged about 40, and leaves a large family. He was a member of the Knights of Labor, but not of the insurance society of the order. He was, however, a member of St. Mary's Beneficial Society.
