Carl V. Allman, 83, of Dogwood Drive, died Tuesday at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Allman was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Alexander, N.C., and was a son of the late Luttrell and Bernice Allman.

He was a graduate of Red Oak High School in Alexander.

Mr. Allman was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the LST 978.

Following the war, in 1948, he and his wife, the former Sophronia Blazer, relocated from Asheville, N.C., to Greeneville.

This enabled him to co-found the first structural steel fabrication company in Greeneville, Hamlin-Allman Steel Corp. "As you drive through Greeneville his legacy of works continue to be a part of the town," a family spokesman said.

A few examples of his structural design and fabrication are: "Ye Olde Towne Gate of Greeneville," Trinity United Methodist Church, and Crescent Elementary School.
Hamlin-Allman served Greeneville and surrounding communities for more than 30 years.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Andrew Johnson Post #1990, and First Baptist Church.

His family noted that he was "a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was an excellent role model for all generations, providing love and support for all."

His wife preceded him in death June 27, 1997.

Survivors include his three children and their spouses: Yvonne (Allman) and Tom Carmichael of Asheville, Steve Vernon Allman of Greeneville, and Linda (Allman) and David Crawford of Montgomery, Ala.; five grandchildren and a granddaughter-in-law: John Paul and Sarah Roberson of Johnson City, Michelle Roberson of Knoxville, Mike Rader Jr. of Montgomery, Ben Crawford of Nashville, and Gavin Crawford of LaGrange, Ga.; and several other family members.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Mr. William (Beulah Allman) Fischer.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Friday in the funeral home chapel with interment in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens. The Rev. Wesley Pike will officiate.

VFW Post #1990 will conduct a military graveside service.

Pallbearers will be Steve V. Allman, John Paul Roberson, Mike Rader Jr., Tom Carmichael, David Crawford, and Gene Gaby.

Larry Lankford will be an honorary pallbearer.
