John Jacob Steffen was born on Nov 1, 1820 in Preußen also known as Prussia. His father Jacob Steffen b1792 was 27 and his mother Katharina Richartz was 28. (His mother died in childbirth giving birth to Nicolaus b1823.) John apparently came to America in 1846 two years prior to the rest of his family. Perhaps this was done to prepare the way for the large family that immigrated in 1848. He married Mary Ann 'Annie' Schomer on December 16, 1852 in Outagamie, Wisconsin. They had eight children in the 18 years between 1856 and 1874, having 2 sons & 6 daughters. He lived the last 20 years of his life in Appleton, Wisc at 439 Pacific Sreet. He passed away on July 8, 1904 in Appleton having lived a long life of 83 years. He is this writers 3rd Cousin, we both having the same ancestor in Johann Philip Stephan b1681 (115861290)

Johann Jacob Steffen was born in Orenhofen on 11/01/1820. He migrated from there in the spring of 1846. With the ship 'Victoria' he reached the harbor of New York in June, 1846. He then worked for several years at Albany in New York State and then moved to Hortonville in Wisconsin. There he built a farm. He learned English through self-study and later read from the Bible and Shakespeare. In 1847 he married Anna Maria Schommer in Milwaukee. She also came from Orenhofen and had immigrated with her parents in 1847. She was born on 06/17/1832 in Orenhofen.
JJ Steffen died in Appleton, Wisconsin on 7/21/1904
