Son of Nichols Smith Hawkins and Mary Cordelia Bayles, husband of Mary Hawkins Macy and father of Edith, Flora May, Effie Belle, Ernest Clifford, Chester Arthur, and Thomas Howard Hawkins.

Lost at sea - It is now an established fact that the vessel which was seen to be sinking of Cornfield Shoals, Long Island Sound, on the 18th of December, by the crew of the Mary Brewer, was the schooner Mary Hamilton of Stony Brook. All hands were lost. The captain, Thomas Hawkins, was a resident of Stony Brook, and leaves a wife and five small children. The cook, James McKittrick, was a resident of St. James and leaves a wife and three children.

"Thomas Hawkins, went down with his vessel one stormy night about twenty years ago in Long Island Sound, and nothing has been heard of boat or crew since."
