Patrick Murray, 94, of Grand Lake Road, Sydney, passed away on a peaceful sunny day, Aug. 4, 2005, in the comfort of his family, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Placentia, Nfld., he was the son of the late Thomas and Emily (Kennedy) Murray. He was a member of St. Augustine's parish. He was employed at Sydney Steel for 38 years and worked at the "docks" where his father had also been general foreman. He was an active union member of Local 1064 of the United Steelworkers of America serving on various committees and was chairman of the union's grievance committee. He retired from the plant in 1975. As a young man, Pat sailed on the merchant ships around the world from 1929 to 1935, bringing home many stories and knowledge of cultures, which he loved to share. He enjoyed spending time at his summer home on the Mira and he was always ready for conversation and camaraderie.

Pat loved his family dearly and often had an encouraging word. Those who knew him will remember him as a fine, strong and deeply devoted man. Surviving are his children, Thomas (Claudette), Westmount, Donald, Sydney, Carol Ann (Harvey) Kiley, Sydney, Emily (Robert) Otterson, Truro, Robert, Sydney, and Patrick (Bernadette), Coxheath. He is also survived by his 13 grandchildren, Anne Marie MacLellan, Brian Davidge, Kevin, Tommy and Michelle Murray, Troy, Kimberly and Harvey Kiley, Jonas and Matthew Otterson, Emily, Christine and Patricia Murray. Also his great-grandchildren, Derek, Shelby, Dylan, Cameron, Katelyn, Kristen,Kathryn and Zarah. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 49 years, Etta "Tootsie" (Horne) in 1988 and by his eldest child, Mary Murray in 1983. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family being predeceased by brothers, Stan and Aloysius and sisters, Jenny Kauffman, Mercedes Bradford and Margaret MacDougall and a brother, Thomas in infancy. Visitation for the late Mr. Murray took place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Saturday, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated today (Monday) at 2 p.m. at St. Augustine's Church with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations may be made to the Diabetes or Arthritis societies or a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to [email protected]
