Joseph Leon Gnann

Joseph Leon Gnann, native of Savannah, passed away Saturday, April 27, after a prolonged illness.

He was a graduate of Savannah High School and Georgia Institute of Technology. In his civilian career he was employed by the Georgia Ports Authority as Director of Personnel and Purchasing, by the City of Savannah as Purchasing Agent and by Volusia County, FL as Director of Purchasing. He also served in the Naval Reserve during WWII in the Pacific Theater of Operations, abroad the aircraft carriers, USS Princeton and USS Boxer during the Korean Conflict and aboard the destroyer USS Robinson during the Berlin Crisis. Commander Gnann was then assigned as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Center in Savannah. In 1986 he retired from the Naval Reserve having served 42 years on both active and reserve duty. He was a charter member of St. Andrews Independent Episcopal Church, having served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden for several terms. His civic involvement included president of the Navy League, a member of Solomon Lodge #1, Knights Temple and Alee Temple, the Jesters and the Kachina Club.

Survivors: his wife of 49 years, Joyce See Gnann of Savannah; daughter, Judy Gnann Headlee, granddaughter, Bailey Elizabeth Headlee and son-in-law, Robert B. Headlee all of Hilton Head Island, SC, one nephew.

Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p. m. Monday, April 29, in Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel.

Funeral Services: 2:00 p. m. Tuesday, April 30, in Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel with Rev. William W. Griffis of Beaufort, SC, officiating.

Entombment: Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Remembrances: Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.
