Leona was the oldest of three daughters or Nelson Narcise Montray and Harriett Willmore. As a nurse she worked in a local hospital and contracted influenza during the epidemic of 1919. During one of her daily walks from home to the lake and back to build up her strength, she disappeared. Her body was found 12 days later in Lake Ontario where she had apparently fallen from the pier. She died of natural causes related to lung and heart damage from the flu, not by drowning.
