From Our Pioneer Heritage: Volume 5: Three Pioneer Women Speak: Eliza Shelton Keeler: A Tribute:
Mr. Keeler continued with the saw mill for another year, and we made cloth and worked together. On the 30th of January, 1867 I had a baby boy whom I called Joel Gideon. The children were going to school and caught the whooping cough, and when the baby was three weeks old, he took it and suffered dreadfully. After three days, during which time we did all that was possible, he died. He was a big baby, weighing eleven pounds at birth. Others of the children were sick also. Maggie and Alice were very bad and we were fearful of their not recovering. I wrapped Alice in a blanket, and father took Margaret in his arms, and so we went to the cemetery.
