DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - Lois Loween Barber Porter of Delray Beach, formerly of Mount Airy, N.C., died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, in the Bethesda Memorial Hospice and Palliative Care Unit located at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach, surrounded by her family.

She was born Feb. 19, 1913, in Dayton, Ohio, to Peter Mente and Nellie Grace Ridgeway Barber. She was the widow of Donald Vincent Porter, who preceded her in death in 1995.

Mrs. Porter is survived by their two sons and their families, Don Charles Porter and wife, Carolyn, of Monroe, N.C., and Douglas Robert Porter and wife, Arlette, of Mount Airy, N.C. She is survived by six grandchildren, Mark Douglas Porter and wife, Janet, of Moneta, Va., Paige Noel Sandford and husband, Bennett, of Hampton, Va., Jennifer Davis Porter of Monroe, N.C., Don Charles Porter II of Monroe, N.C., Andrea Kittrell and husband, Bill, of Lynchburg, Va., and Douglas Robert Porter Jr. and wife, Meghann, of Raleigh, N.C. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Arren Porter of Moneta, Va., Parker, Micah, Drew and Siri Paige Sandford of Hampton, Va., and Allie, Anna Claire and Elizabeth Kittrell of Lynchburg, Va.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and her three siblings, Donald Ridgeway, George Russell and Betty Jean Barber.

Mrs. Porter moved to Mount Airy in 1970, when the L.S. Starrett Co. purchased their family business, the Herman Stone Co. of Dayton, Ohio, and Mount Airy. She resided there with her husband until retiring to Florida in 1982. At the time of her death, she was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy, although she had been active in First Presbyterian Church while residing in Mount Airy and in Delray Presbyterian Church in earlier years. Both Mrs. Porter and her husband were always involved in the music program of their church. She was known for her musical and artistic talent. She taught many people the art of ceramic painting and had her own shop in Mount Airy for many years.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Terry Matthews and Mr. Kevin Naef. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church parlor.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the hospice of the donor's choice or the sanctuary fund of Central United Methodist Church, 1909 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030.
