Charles A. Matern, 81, Topeka, Kansas, passed away January 17, 2013, in Topeka. He was born November 4, 1931 in St. Louis, MO to Elmer & Caroline Haller Matern.

Charles served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean conflict. He belonged to the American Legion Post, # 198 and was a member of Corinthian Lodge, # 79AF & AM for over fifty years.

He began his career as a heavy equipment mechanic for Buick in St. Louis. He worked for Fleet Service in Topeka for 23 years, as well as White Star Machinery and BRB Contractors from which he retired in 1993.

Charles married Patricia A. Garland, November 6, 1987 in Topeka. She survives at the home.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his first wife Carol Kuhner Matern in 1986, and his brother Elmer J. Matern in 1978.

Other survivors include a sister Elvadine Blakely, Eskridge, KS; a son Steven A. Matern, St. Louis, MO; a daughter Pamela A. Howey, Carbondale, KS; three stepdaughters, Wanda Keith, Emporia, KS; Cynthia Rose, Kansas City, KS; and Katie Laatikainen, New York City, NY; as well as 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Harveyville Church of Christ, Harveyville, KS. Burial will be in Harveyville Cemetery. Charles will lie in state Sunday, January 20, 2013, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Carey Funeral Home, Burlingame, KS where the family will receive friends and relatives.
