Dorothy was born March 29, 1920, to Charles and Mary Himes in Salt Lake City.

She passed away on Jan. 14, 2013, in Salt Lake City after a short illness.

When Dorothy was three years old the family moved to Park City, Utah, where she grew up.

She was the oldest of six children. Dorothy went all the way through school in Park City and graduated in the class of 1938.

She was working as a cashier in Park City when she met a mineworker named Steven Lynn Mayne.

On May 24, 1941, they eloped to Evanston, Wyo., and were married. Their first son was born in 1942, and then Steve joined the U.S. Army and left to fight in WWII.

Dorothy stayed in Park City and raised their son.

Steve came back and went back to mining. They left Park City and went to Monticello, Utah, where they lived for 10 years. They had four more children and moved to Grants in 1959.

Steve worked as a purchasing agent for Homestake Mining Company while Dorothy stayed home and raised their five children.

Dorothy always made the best of things wherever she was living. She made friends and got involved in the community.

She worked with the PTA at her children's schools and volunteered to be room mother. She worked with the Girl Scouts and high school science fairs. Dorothy volunteered with the American Red Cross and the March of Dimes.

In Grants she was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and WAAIME, an organization for wives of men who worked in the mining industry. She was also a member of the Cibola Arts Council and the Cibola General Hospital Auxiliary. She served as an officer in all of these organizations. She did volunteer work at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop, putting in thousands of hours of volunteer time during 45 years.

In1986 she was named as Woman of the Year by the AAUW for all of her years of service to the community.

She and Steve traveled a great deal, going on many cruises and seeing much of the world. Dorothy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where she served in many capacities. She loved her church and was very faithful.

Dorothy lost her husband Steve in 1993 after 52 years of marriage

She is survived by her five children: Charles and wife, Judy, of Salt Lake City; Steve and wife, Kathy, of Bluewater, N.M.; Michael of Mimbres, N.M.; Jackie and husband, Doug, Bloomfield of Ramah, N.M.; and Cindy and husband, Wendell, Behunin, of Lehi, Utah; three brothers: Gene Himes, of Enumclaw, Wash.; Jack Himes, of Las Cruces, N.M.; and Hal Himes, of Brigham City, Utah; 18 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
