George was born on September 29, 1915, in Pennsylvania. He grew up in the
little town of Howard. He was estranged from his family in Pennsylvania and
had relocated to SW Florida prior to his tour in Vietnam.

He joined the Army and was a career military man. His tour in Vietnam began on
November 7, 1968, with the HHD, 44TH SIG BN, 160TH SIG GROUP, 1ST SIGNAL BDE.

On January 22, 1969, he gave his life for our Country in Bien Hoa Province,
South Vietnam.

He was promoted posthumously and received a National Defense, Vietnam Service,
Vietnam Campaign Medals, and Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation.

Spec Barger, Vietnam, Dies

Specialist 6 George H. Barger, 53, formerly of Howard, was found dead in bed last Wednesday, in Vietnam, according to word received by local relatives. A military funeral will be arranged for him.

A career man, Spec. Barger had had 21 years of military service. He had been in Vietnam only two months, after three years of duty in West Germany.

His wife, Maria, formerly of West Germany, is now living in Florida.

Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, George R. Barger of Beech Creek, and a daughter, Mrs. Paul Fye, Mill Hall R.D. 2, children of his marriage to Mrs. Evelyn Gardner Barger, also of Beech Creek; a brother, Robert, State College; a sister, Mrs. Donald Burchard, Jersey Shore, and four grandchildren.

Before joining the service, Spec. Barger attended the Williamsport Technical Institute and worked for a time at Avco Lycoming Division in Wlliamsport. He was a member of the Masonic lodge in State College, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose and Elks lodges.
