Merrill Elwood "Red" West was born on June 6, 1920 on the John West farm in Cataract, WI to Spencer and Lillian (Schilhable) West. He attended the Cataract Grade School and graduated from Sparta High School in 1938.

Red, his brother, Dutch, and friend, Spencer Olsen, joined the Army Air Corp. together in 1940. He was stationed at Hickam Field in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. He then spent the duration of WWII Island-hopping throughout the pacific and was on Iwo Jima just before the war ended. He received the Soldier's Medal for rescuing a pilot from a burning aircraft. After the war ended, he returned to Wisconsin.

Red was united in marriage to Emma Roseland of Melrose on November 16, 1946 in West Allis, WI. They were married 65 years and had two children. Red made up for taking his new bride deer hunting for their honeymoon by rejoining the Air Force and they spent his career traveling the world. They were stationed in Japan during the Korean War and during the Berlin Crisis in France and Germany. They also were stationed from one end of the United States to the other before Red's retirement in 1967.

After retiring, they spent a few years in Milwaukee, then moved to Idaho where they lived for 26 years before moving to Colorado in 1998. No matter where they traveled, Wisconsin was always home and the friends they made here were life long.

Red enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing horseshoe and baseball, and was a wonderful dancer. He never knew a stranger and always enjoyed getting to know people.

Red passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at Colorado State Veterans Home, Aurora, CO at the age of 92 years, 6 months, and 20 days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma; parents; 1 brother; 9 sisters-in-law; and 11 brothers-in-law.

He is survived by his children, Clarence (Mary) West of Casco, WI and Kathleen (Gary) Greene of Centennial, CO; grandchildren, Michael Greene, Matthew (Anne) Greene, Jonathan (Kaycee) West, and Andrew West; great grandchildren, Adeline and Joseph Greene and Liam West.
