Michael Alexander (Lazaroff), of New York City, formerly of the North Side, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010.

Born July 17, 1921, in Macedonia, Yugoslavia, he was the son of the late Alexander and Mary Lazaroff.

Mr. Alexander graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1943 and from Harvard Law School in 1949. During World War II, he served as a captain in the Army in the Pacific. Mr. Alexander had a distinguished career as a lawyer. In 1950, he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar, and in 1951, to the New York Bar. He was a senior partner in the Park Avenue firm of Smith, Steibel, Alexander & Saskor and retired from legal practice at Holland & Knight. Mr. Alexander was legal adviser to many British and Irish government organizations and corporations. In recognition of his service to Britain, the British Consulate to New York and the British-American Chamber of Commerce, he was honored as Commander of the British Empire, by Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth, in 1972. He represented the Irish Consulate to New York, the Irish Trade Board, Waterford Crystal, Wedgwood, Aer Lingus and served as National Secretary of the Ireland-U.S. Council. At his retirement from the Council in 2007, he received a special recognition award for more than five decades of care and diligence to council matters. Mr. Alexander, a non-alcoholic, served the organization of Alcoholics Anonymous as a legal adviser from the mid-1950s until 1976, when he became a trustee. He continued as trustee until 1985. He was elected chairman of the general service board of Alcoholics Anonymous and served as trustee chairman from 1988 to 1993. An ardent golfer, Mr. Alexander was a long time member of the Westchester Country Club. He was a resident of both New York City and East Hampton.

He is survived by his wife, Claire Alexander, to whom he was married for 59 years; his brothers, Louis A. Lazaroff and Thomas A. Lazaroff and his wife, Suzanne, of Ross Township; nieces, Linda Pielin, of Ross Township; Cynthia Lazaroff, of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; Lynn Brindell, of Tuxedo Park, N.Y.; Elizabeth Lazaroff, of Petaluma, Calif.; and nephew, Thomas A. Lazaroff Jr., of Los Angeles, Calif. He was great-uncle to Kaitlyn, MacKenzie, Boden, Mia and Nicholas. Friends will be received from 10 until the time of service at 1 p.m. Monday in SIMONS FUNERAL HOME, 7720 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15237, with burial to follow in Allegheny County Memorial Park.
