Donald "Donnie" Koester, 72, of Ovid passed away Thursday, January 17, 2013 in Castle Rock, CO. Visitation will be from 2 pm to 6 pm Sunday, January 20 at Austin-Tennant Funeral Home with Recitation of the Rosary following at 6 pm. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 am Monday, January 21 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Julesburg with Reverend Bryon Ernest celebrating. Interment will follow at the Ovid Cemetery.

Donnie was born on November 19, 1940 in Sidney to Henry Koester and Helen Nienhuser. He went to grade school and high school in Peetz, CO and the Cleveland School of Meat Cutting, Toledo, OH. He worked for Decker's Grocery in Sidney, U Save Grocery in Sterling, Berthoud Grocery, D&J Meat Packing in Greeley, and owned and operated D&L Meat Co. in Ovid from 1976 to 2011. He married Linda Weinbender on Sept. 26, 1964 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Julesburg. They were married for 47 years. He was a member of the Ovid Lions Club and the Elk and Moose Lodge in Ogallala. His work was his life and his hobby. He was always happiest doing what he loved. Donald loved to laugh especially with a cold beer in his hand. He sincerely cared about people and would help anyone. He was a simple man and he was especially known for his one line humor that was hilarious.

He is survived by his daughter Dana Koester-Hicks (Edgar) of Denver; grandson Jared Koester (Evelyn) of Denver; step-granddaughter Danielle Hicks of Denver; great-stepgrandson Kellin Hicks of Denver; brothers Jerry Koester of Scottsbluff, Bob Koester (Bonnie) Ogallala, Charles Koester (Jean) of Greeley, Ed Koester (Pam) of Peetz; sister Geraldine Button (Jerry) of Denton, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife Linda; parents Henry and Helen; sisters Dorothy Treinen and Mary Ann Cooper; brother John Koester. Memorials may be made to the Donald Koester Memorial Fund c/o Austin-Tennant Funeral Home, PO Box 24, Julesburg, CO 80737.
