On Monday morning, Jan. 14, 2013, Grace (Kikkert) Byrd transitioned due to complications from a fall. She was the last member of the Kikkert family raised in the Dutch community outside of Rapelje.

She was born on May 13, 1920, at the family home to Nick and Grace Kikkert. Unfortunately, her mother passed away right after her birth. As Grace would tell it, all six kids, Irene, Alice, Mildred, Ruth, Leroy and Grace, were "farmed out" to family and friends. So she spent the first two years of her life with her Tante Winnie in Billings. Her father then brought the family back together and Grace met the only mother she knew, Nellie, and soon had a baby sister named Joan.

Grace started working when she was 14 and never quit until her late 80s. When she first came to Billings, she worked at Pierce Packing. She met the love of her life, William H. Byrd Jr. "Billy," and they were married in 1944. They had four children. When the youngest went to school, Grace began her long career as a cook. She started in the kitchen of New Western Manor but eventually cooked at various restaurants around Billings. She was proud that many customers told her she cooked the best steak in town.

Grace is survived by her sons James (Catie) and Gary of Billings; her daughters Mary Ann of Huntley and Linnell (Lee) Rickaway of DeSoto, Texas; her stepdaughters JoAnn (Roger) Mollett of Billings and Virginia (Larry) Williamson of Missoula. This also includes all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with a great-great-granddaughter on the way, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Grace joins those that went before her, including her husband, Billy, her stepson William M. "Little Bill" and her last dog Foxy, who we believe knew something was changing and chose to go before her.

The family would like to thank Jim and Catie for having Grace spend her last weeks at their house, JoAnn for coming faithfully for coffee, her friends Linda and Russ Thuesen and their family, also friends Mary, Nadine and Wanda. We thank her neighbors for watching out for her, especially Ernst who always shoveled her walks.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, at Cremation & Funeral Gallery, 29 Eighth St. W., Billings, MT.

Memorials may be made in Grace's name to Montana Rescue Mission, 2520 First Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101.

Arrangements are by Cremation & Funeral Gallery.
