Willard Coppock dead at age 95

Francis Willard Coppock, 95, a prominent local resident and former Alfalfa County Treas., died February 8 at St. Mary's Hospital, Enid.

Funeral services were at 2 PM Wednesday at the Friends Church with the Rev. Robert Hutson officiating. Interment was at Cherokee Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

He was known locally as a source of county history as he came to Oklahoma as a baby with his father in the Land Run of 1893 and spent most of his life in this area.

He was born in Jewell County, Kansas, January 6, 1892, to Alvin and Laura Ann Stanley Coppock. The Coppocks settled near the site of the future Stella Friends Academy North of Cherokee. Coppock graduated from the academy, the first accredited high school in Alfalfa County, in 1912. He was active in all sports.

In 1913, he taught school South of Wakita. In 1917 he was called to the Cottonwood Friends Church. Three years later he taught school at Riverside for two years, Stella school one year and Naviland one year. He attended school at Malese School, Cleveland, Ohio, and Huntington Park, California, for one year.

In 1923, Coppock married Esther Marie Simmons in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. They lived on a farm Northeast of Cherokee until 1929.

In 1957 he was elected county treasurer, a position he held for 16 years. Upon retirement he was active with garden and yard work and often furnished fresh vegetables for the citizens gatherings.

He was a member of the Friends Church, fifty-year member of Masonic Lodge and the Order of Eastern Star, Cherokee Senior Citizens, Lions Club and the Gideon Society.

In an interview for the Cherokee Messenger in 1982, he gave a formula for long life. Never stop. Keep active with both mind and body. Eat a balanced diet. Be temperate in all things. Serve your Heavenly Father and good health will be a model.

He is survived by one son, Bruce, Cherokee; one daughter, Martha Stewart, Cherokee, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife on may 30, 1979, and by a son, Delmer, July 25, 1985.
