Marie Polkey Scott of Raytown, Missouri, passed away January 17, 2013. Visitation will be held from 12-1:00 p.m. Monday, January 21 at St. John Frances Regis Church, 8941 James A. Reed Rd, Kansas City, MO. Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Born August 12, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska, the third of seven children born to Arnold and Mary (born Riha) Wichita. Her mother and father were children of Czech immigrants, second-generation Americans who worked in the Omaha stockyards (her father, after WWI service) and for the Union Pacific Locomotive Service (her mother, during WWI, before her marriage). Following high school graduation, Marie took a job with the Weather Bureau in Omaha. Marie learned to fly a plane before she learned to drive a car, and formed a flying club with a group of similarly inclined colleagues in Omaha, who then pooled funds to buy an Aeronica L-3, which they each flew under a shared ownership agreement. The plane exists today, with a South Dakota owner. In 1947, she married John H. 'Jack' Polkey Jr., who, following WWII service, worked for the (then) Federal Aviation Agency, and moved to Kansas City, Missouri. They raised five children. After working in advertising and subscription sales for several Kansas City suburban newspapers, Marie became a real estate agent, working with Woods Realtor. Following the death of Jack in 1981, in 1986 she married Addison Scott, a retired Air Traffic controller. They enjoyed traveling together until he died in a traffic accident in 1989, in Iowa. Having put four children through college, she fulfilled a lifelong wish by returning to school herself; in 1993, she graduated from Longview Community College with an Associate's Degree. Marie was a 19-year volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital, and was a parishioner at St. Regis Catholic Church since the parish was formed. Surviving are brothers Arnold Wichita (Richardson, TX), James Wichita (Omaha, NE) and sister Agnes Stark (South Omaha, NE); five children: Stephen (Paola, KS), Judith (Bloomfield, IA), Patricia Polkey Yount (Pacific, MO), Mary (Advance, NC), and Martha (Leesburg, VA); grandchildren, Sarah Biehle (Blair), Rachael Budiansky, Andrew Budiansky, Renee Bowman (Justin) and Sara Trammell (Derek) and 1 great grandchild. Donations are suggested to Catholic Relief Services in Marie's honor. Condolences may be left for the family at www.muehlebachchapel.com. Muehlebach Funeral Home & Cremations. Family Owned since 1954. 816.444.2060 www.muehlebachchapel.com
