Roy Bowers, 76, died in Klamath Falls on Jan. 16, 2013.
When he was in third grade, the family moved to the hills above Silverton, Ore., where he graduated high school in 1955. He married Donna Walker that same year and began a family with son John and daughters Kathy and Karen. In 1977, the couple divorced.
Roy worked at McKay's Market in Eugene/Springfield as produce manager and later drove a milk delivery truck for Meadow Bell Dairy. In 1964, he became a lineman for Springfield Municipal Power Co.
Roy came back to Klamath Falls in 1967 to form a partnership with his older brother John as Bowers Excavating and Fence Co. In 1975, he started his own company, Roy Bowers Excavating. He sold the business to his nephew Buck McBride in 1994 and achieved a dream by purchasing a ranch on Tingley Lane.
He enjoyed golfing and fulfilled a lifelong dream when he attended golf school in Arizona. He also enjoyed traveling around the country with his daughter, showing his red angus cattle. He was a lifelong horseshoe pitcher and was three-time Oregon State Elders Champion. In 2007, he was the Elders Class B World Champion and over in the next five years placed in the top 10 of the Elders World Championship, taking third in the world in 2008.
In 2003, Roy married Virginia Burton in Nevada. They sold his Tingley Lane ranch in 2005 and moved to Malin.
Roy was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved his family and cherished his friends. He was a man of honor, integrity and a man of his word in his personal, as well as professional, life. He was indeed a true gentleman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jack Bowers and John Bowers and sisters Dorothy Stephens, Sue Murr and Georgia McBride.
Survivors include his wife Ginny; children John Bowers and Kathy Bowers of Klamath Falls and Karen Murphy of Sparks, Nev.; grandchildren Ben Bowers, Michelle Martin, Timothy Bowers, Jonathan Bowers, Joe Young, Jeff Bowers and Erica Walsh; and great-grandchildren Blaise, Cyrus, Eliana, Isabel, James and Jillian.
