SMITH, CORNELIA J.

Gainesville - Cornelia Jones Smith, 92, retired teacher passed away Jan. 9, 2013 at Shands Hospital, she was a Gainesville native.

She was a graduate of Lincoln High School class of 1938. She received her BS degree from Barber Scotia, Concord, NC and her MS degree from Syracuse Univ. Syracuse, NY. She was the first Afro American librarian in Alachua County. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where she served on L.C. Gamble Ministry, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Lincoln High Alumni Assoc. and Alachua County Retired Teachers.

Survivors three nephews Charles B. Jones, Gainesville, FL Maxie L. Jones, Daytona Beach, FL. Lansing, (Angela) Jones, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; one niece Maxine (Clarence) Mann Daytona Beach, FL; cousin Alvyne (Chelua) Wilson, whom she reared from a toddler Gainesville, FL., other special cousins Deborah Wilson, Michael and Ronald Hill all of Gainesville, FL, Veronica Woodard, Sunrise, FL, Sheila Hill, Fernandina Beach, FL.

Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with Dr. N. LaMonte Newsome Pastor burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery under the care of Chestnut Funeral Home, 18 N.W. 8th Ave Gainesville, FL. Visitation Friday Chestnut Memorial Chapel 2:00 -7:00 PM and on Saturday at the church one hour before the service. The cortege will form at the home of Mrs. Smith 306 S.E.15th St. at 10:15 AM.
