Services for Mrs. George W.P. Coates were held in the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest in Abilene.
One of the city's pioneer women leaders, she was born near Waco and was the daughter of Major Francis Hugh Graham and Mary Augusta Graham. Mrs. Coates received her education in Grahamston and Louisville, Kentucky while living with her aunt, Mrs. B. Fairleigh, and at a boarding school in New York City, returning to Waco.
Mr. and Mrs. Coates were married on 15 April 1891 in Waco. They lived in Abilene and on the Highland Ranch near Albany until 1909 when they moved permanently to Abilene.
Mrs. Coates was active for many years in women's clubs and civic Work. During World War I, she was Taylor County's woman's chair of war savings stamps and Liberty bond sales. She was a life member of the Carnegie Library board and past president of the Shakespeare Club, member of the Abilene Woman's Club, and charter member of the 21 Club.
An active worker in the Episcopal Church in Abilene for more than 50 years, she had been president of St. Anne's Guild and the Woman's Auxiliary of the Church of the Heavenly Rest.
She is survived by her husband; two sons - Francis Graham Coates and George Hunter Coates; her sisters - Mrs. M.D. Herring, Mrs. Walter P. Stewart; four grandchildren.
