BELLVILLE: A wise man once said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." VIC ROBERTS, one who gave his time, skills, and love to his family, friends and community, passed away Friday morning, January 18, 2013 in Knox Community Hospital. He was 84.

He was born October 12, 1928 in Butler the son of Rupert and Vera (Ritter) Roberts and was graduated from Butler High School in 1946. Vic was a tremendous athlete, excelling in basketball. He was MVP of the 1945 State Champion Varsity Basketball Team and leading scorer in the play-off game. Vic also attended The Ohio State University.

On December 7, 1947 he married Della Jane Smith. The couple were "two peas in a pod" and were rarely seen apart. A faithful devoted husband, Vic cared for Della Jane throughout her illness, a constant until her passing in 2008.

The very definition of a small business owner, Vic started his company, Roberts Insulation, and worked as the sole employee. Forty years later, his son and grandson would help run his family company, Richland Insulation, Inc.

A pillar in the village of Bellville, Vic volunteered much of his time for the better of his community. For over 50 years, Vic was a volunteer fireman for the Bellville-Jefferson Township Fire and Rescue Squad. He served nearly 20 years as the Assistant Chief and with the other volunteers formed a brotherhood of friendship. He was also vital to the department as a training officer. Vic was a member of the Bellville Street Fair Board, and served as secretary of the board for 13 years. He also served on the Village Council for ten years.

Vic was very active with the Bellville Youth League, and served as president when lights on the Little League field in Bellville where installed. He also was a regular in the stands at ball games and athletic events watching his children, and recently his great-grandchildren.

An outdoorsman, Vic enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was instrumental in forming the Ohio Bow Club. Every summer for the past 40 years, he looked forward to the annual trip to North Wind Lake in Canada to fish with his sons and grandchildren. Likely to drop a line in any fishing hole, it was well known that Vic kept his fishing gear in the trunk of his car.

Vic and Della Jane found harmony together on the golf course. They played on several couple's leagues and enjoyed their annual trip to Myrtle Beach. Vic and Della Jane also loved the Muirfield Tournament where they usually sat the ninth green.

Vic was a former member of New Life Church of Christ.

Truly genuine, he will be remembered for is kind and caring ways, his humility an example for all.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Ronald & Jeanie Roberts and Craig & Pamela Roberts all of Bellville; grandchildren Jennifer & Troy Hamilton, Christa & Scott Arnett, Ronald, II and Kristi Roberts, Lindsay and Laura Roberts, and Emily and Jeff McDonald; great grandchildren Jacob Hamilton, Morgan Arnett, Elli Arnett, Tabitha Hamilton, Paige Arnett, Ashtynn Roberts, Hayden Roberts, Ava Roberts, Blaze Victor Roberts and Hudson Roberts; siblings and their spouses Samuel and Shirley Roberts, Reginald Roberts, and Mary Lou and Myron Delaney; his wife's siblings Ruth Hennessey, Bill and Jewelene Smith along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

In addition to his wife, Vic was preceded in death by a sister Patricia Plenge and sisters-in-law Joanie Roberts, and Charlene Roberts.
