Annie May was born in the old Bartow Shaw home at Shaw's Crossroads in Sumter County, daughter of the late Bertha Madge Griffin of Pinewood and the late William Judson Shaw of Sumter. She was named after her aunt, her mother's sister, Annie May Griffin Ross (people often incorrectly misspelled her middle name as Mae). Black neighbor, "Aunt" Sallie White, who had helped her father raise her two older half brothers, was also a key part of Annie May's childhood.

Links to many family photos are on her half-brother's memorial, HERE.

Her primary education was in the Sumter city schools, and she graduated from Edmunds High School class of 1940 (the class of 1940 was the first class of graduates as graduates of Edmunds High School rather than Sumter High School, https://www.edmundshigh.com/alumni.html?x=info&c=40). She attended Coker College for two years (as a Music major) & then transferred and graduated from Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1945 (the school from which her mother graduated in 1916).

A career registered nurse, she was employed by Johnson Memorial Hospital in Hemingway for a short while and Williamsburg County Memorial Hospital in Kingstree from the time it opened until her retirement.

Raised a Methodist, she was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hemingway for many years and later at Isle of Palms United Methodist Church, serving as a soloist in the choir at both churches. She was a long time member of The Crafty Ladies at Isle of Palms United Methodist Church. She retired to Columbia and became a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

She was first married to the late George Taylor Eaddy of Hemingway, father of her children. During George's time in military service, the family was stationed in England where their oldest daughter started first grade at age five. Her second marriage was to the late James Samuel Prevatte of Plantersville, S. C. Mrs. Prevatte died peacefully at her Columbia home.

Surviving her are her children, "Beth" Elizabeth Eaddy Welch (husband, Gene, pre-deceased 2008 & their son, Brian pre-deceased 1997), Carol Ann Eaddy and Barbara Dale Eaddy all of Columbia; step-children, James S. Prevatte, Jr. (Wanda) and Eugene Delaire Prevatte (Wanda) all of Georgetown; grandchildren, Marcus (Mellissa), Rae (Jesse), Taylor (Nancy), Maggie (Aaron), Laura, Belle, Tavish (Eric), Bonnie (Fred), Claire (Matt), Mary Britton (Chase), Sallie, Cody, Clint, Caleb and Kayla; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by: a step-child, Sherrill Claire P. Senseney (David); son-in-law, Gene Welch and grandson, Brian Welch. Woodridge Memorial Park & Funeral Home is assisting the family locally (Columbia).

Graveside services were held February 2, 2013 at 2pm at Old Johnsonville Cemetery (S. C. 41/51) Johnsonville, in the cemetery next door to Johnsonville Methodist Church, handled by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway.

It was a beautiful, sunny, cool & breezy day. Several attendees/family spoke of wonderful memories of Annie May. Her grandson Taylor Silver gave the eulogy: a very touching remembrance of the truth that strong family bonds do not "just happen" & that Annie May was the primary "glue" that has resulted in hugely strong and positive bonds within her entire blended (immediate & extended) family and has served as a truly remarkable example for coming generations.

The family requests memorials be made to the church of your choice in Mrs. Prevatte's honor or to Palmetto Health Hospice, 1400 Pickens Street PO Box 7275 Columbia SC 29201. Online condolences are available at www.woodridge-lexington.com
