Walter served as a Second Lieutenant, 418th Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in the British West Indies prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on May 11, 1942. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Manager and also as Single, without dependents.

Walter died in the "Line Of Duty" of a non-battle related incident in France during the war.

Brother of Barbara R. Grinnel who resided in Scarborough Tabago, British West Indies.

Walter, a U.S. Citizen, is one of only two soldiers interred in Epinal American Cemetery whose headstone notes a foreign country.

The other foreign country burial is 2nd Lt Richard C Rowe.
